Want to feel like a princess or prince? Try running for homecoming royalty; being elected as a prince, queen, king, or princess can make you feel special–just as if you were the star of the show, but on a football field. This year’s homecoming was a night to remember, like many years before. The members of the royalty who were crowned king, queen, and princess will remember being crowned for years to come.
Homecoming happens every school year during the end of the football season. It’s a time to run against your friends or schoolmates to compete for a crown. This is probably the tensest and most nerve-racking time of the school year. It allows people to use their creativity when making posters that encourage people to vote for them. This Is also an exciting part of high school because it allows people to have fun, and allows the contestants to learn to compete with their heart. It also helps people learn that they can’t win it all, but they can try their very best.
Homecoming is a special event that takes place mainly in High School and some colleges as well. It is a great time to celebrate the school spirit. It encourages students to all come as one and vote for who best represents each class or who can make a good ambassador. According to a survey of Crownpoint High School students, 85% of students believe that people voted for the person who is well-known or popular. The other 15% think people vote to show who represents each class the best. From my experience, I believe people vote on who is well-known and who displays leadership. Here at Crown Point High School voting took place online through Microsoft Forms. Many schools use similar applications to vote online or they may choose to conduct a vote on paper. Getting people to vote for you is a competition. You must be creative in the best way possible, by making posters and campaigning to earn votes. People can take this type of event very seriously, or just do it for fun, and many attempt running for royalty.
Running for this event comes with many different emotions. Some contestants take this event very seriously, meaning if they have lost, they tend to feel beaten or less popular. On the other hand, if the contestant has won, they feel accomplished and more popular. As a reminder to both parties, this is a competition. However, most of the time these contestants put a smile on their faces when losing or winning. I also see this homecoming royalty activity to build self-confidence.
I conducted interviews of past contestants who stated that they enjoyed running for royalty and felt proud of stepping out of their comfort zone to compete. One person stated that, “Even though I lost, I still had fun making posters, joining the Hoco parade, and handing out treats for people to vote for me. It was an experience and that you can’t win all the time.”
As a 2022-2023 homecoming royalty contestant, this event made me realize how people can support one person. The support you get from your friends and family is amazing. Your friends and family are a reason why it’s possible to run for royalty. They support you, encourage you, praise you, and help make memories. On both sides of my family and my peers, they did their best to help me make creative posters, prepare goodies to hand out, and they’ve also spent their money to gather materials, and this helped me win candidacy. They helped me prepare for my eventful week during homecoming. With all the support and help, my displays were over the top. If anything, this event gave me that time to create a stronger bond with my parents, family, and friends. My personal experience was one to remember and I’ve learned a lot about myself, and I’m sure the other contestants felt the same way.
