Are you involved in school clubs? No? Well, I would like to explain why Crownpoint High does not have many clubs like it used to when our parents were in high school.
One student said, “It would be fun to have more activities, than just what we have.” This response gave me the motivation to answer this important question: “Why don’t we have any other activities to do at school, besides the activities we already have?” Many people wonder why Crownpoint has less activities than the average school around the Navajo Nation. This article will reveal the opinions of the students and the principal of Crownpoint Highschool about extracurricular activities.
Do you know the talk of your peers that enjoy a club they are in? This is an opportunity to explain why we do not have other subjects or clubs, such as band, music, computer/tech, astronomy, automotive, woodshop, cooking/culinary arts, and home economics. The reason for this is the lack of participation, or less attention to what the students want when they are at school. It would also be great for students to participate more and to ease the tension they build up from school or from home. This includes helping the students to find more hobbies to take interest in. Therefore, having other activities to enjoy at school would be great to add to the fun activities at Crownpoint Highschool.
A survey of Crownpoint High School students helped to achieve feedback from the students about what classes or programs they wish were offered. Of the responses collected, there were nine votes for music, and five for wood shop. Finally, cooking/culinary arts earned the most votes of all with ten. Students were asked about their interest in creating a club, and the responses were 50/50. Half of the student participants would like to create clubs, and the other half did not want to host a club of their own. Then, students were asked if they like the activities we already have at Crownpoint High and a majority of students indicated that they are not satisfied by the clubs that are offered. Most students voluntarily choose to create several activities that were not listed in the survey, such as an animation club, cooking and sewing, and gaming. The remainder of students answered cooking, which was the most popular responses.
Our principle, Ms. Morris, was interviewed about her thoughts on the extracurricular activities. “It provides an opportunity for teachers and students to interact with one another in a different setting and develop a trust between them. It also allows for students to interact with one another outside of the academic setting,” said Mrs. Morris. However, she emphasizes that it can be difficult to find time for these activities: “Unfortunately we cannot offer any time during the school day for extracurricular activities. However, if any student wants to start a club that we do not currently have, all they need to do is find a teacher to be the sponsor and find some students to be in the club. Then we could offer time after the school day for students to participate in the meetings.” This response confirmed that students can start any club at any time.
Another Crownpoint High School student was asked if the school should offer more activities, and she replied, “I’m not opposed to it, but I think it would be fun to have more things to do, than just what we have.” Many Crownpoint High School students clearly think it would be nice to have other activities than those that are currently offered.
I agree with the interview and survey participants that want to try new activities. Crownpoint High should have new activities to fulfill the students’ opportunities to have fun and experience new things!
