Have you ever wondered about the history of town you live in? I have been wondering about my town’s history for quite some time. According to my research, the town of Crownpoint, New Mexico originated in 1912 when it was founded by Samuel F. Stacher. It started out as an Indian agency to serve the Navajo people in the Pueblo Bonito Agency of Northwestern New Mexico. It had a school, an agency office, and powerhouse to take care of the peoples’ needs and to accommodate for future projects or establishments. It is important to know this history so we can understand where Crownpoint started from.
In June 1965, Crownpoint was recognized as a local chapter government subunit of the Navajo Nation government. There is a total of 110 Navajo chapters across the Navajo Nation. The Crownpoint chapter serves as the centre of Eastern Navajo Agency, and many tribal offices are in the community. Crownpoint is part of central McKinley County, which leads south to Thoreau and Interstate 40 and north to Farmington. Our community sits at an elevation of 6,851 feet, washing any water to the Chaco River which is north of our town.
To really lean into how the history and geography of Crownpoint affects it to the present day, it is best to find out directly from the people who have established their lives there. I interviewed my grandmother, who has lived in Crownpoint for many years, and I asked her how Crownpoint has changed. She noted, “The town has been changing rapidly; some things have been removed while some things have been added.” She discussed how the geography impacts the growth of the town, and that there are some drawbacks with regard to the town’s location. She pointed out, “The elevation keeps the town dry because all the rain we get runs down to the river and it doesn’t soak in like other places and that’s why we don’t have a lot of businesses and people around.”
I was also curious how the Crownpoint Chapter has influenced the town in recent years, so I asked my uncle for some insight on this topic. He stated that “The chapter has been focused on economical development and local government, like working on giving people homes and helping local businesses that are in the area.” He insisted that the chapter is very important aspect of Crownpoint, New Mexico, adding, “The chapter has been helping Crownpoint for a while, whether it’s housing, helping the town’s economy, or by funding the Crownpoint police department. So, the chapter has done a lot for the town and its history by continuing to do these things for the community.”
Crownpoint’s history has played a major role in shaping the community that exists today. One example is the Crownpoint Chapter, which has provided support and resources to local residents for many years, including assistance with food, housing, and employment opportunities. Another example is how the town has grown and changed over time. What began as an Indian agency serving the Navajo people eventually developed into a community with its own schools, businesses, and housing.
The town’s geography has also influenced its development. Crownpoint’s elevation affects local water flow and contributes to the area’s dry climate, making it vulnerable at times to high temperatures and periods of drought. While Crownpoint has many strengths, the community continues to face challenges such as drought and unemployment.
Overall, studying Crownpoint’s history shows how the decisions, events, and people of the past helped create the community we know and love today. Understanding this history provides a better appreciation for the town’s growth, its challenges, and the resilience of the people who call Crownpoint home. It also reminds us that the choices made today will help shape Crownpoint’s future for generations to come.
